2016 Commitment - Algevion Eichelberger

This is not a sexy commitment I guess, but I see it as a commitment of need. I personally have been clamoring for a recruit that I classify as a junk yard dog type. The last one I considered such was Marlon Brumfield.

Eichelberger is 6'6/6'7 but his reach was measured at 7'2. For frame of reference, that is about where Trey Lyles, Bobby Portis, Dakari Johnson, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson came in at, and an inch and a half shorter than Cliff Alexander's.

I get your point, but I think it diminishes this commitment some. He is not some player you take because you have to appease coaches to get a bigger reward (i.e. He is not Lil Romeo where Cyrus is Demar Derozan). He is, in football terms, an offensive lineman. No one goes gaga when their school gets a quality O-lineman, but they are needed.

This feels like a plan F type commitment.  We are going to be godawful in the post next year and I don't see how AI helps.  It's a good thing he has a long reach because it looks like he has a 12 inch vertical.   Maybe he will contribute after a few years of being in the weight room, eating right, and working on his body, but I was really hoping for an impact forward/center to commit that could contribute next year because we are going to need it.  I understand we have to take what we can get, but commitments like this will keep us running in place and not moving forward.  If Marlon Jones commits, I will feel a lot better about this commitment, but as it stands, we don't need another project and I refuse to give the staff any credit for landing a player like this. 

Here are the other schools that offered him: Bowling Green, Cal State-Fullerton, Central Michigan, Columbia, Cornell, Detroit, Northern Illinois, Princeton, Rice, Toledo, UC-Davis, UC-Santa Barbara, Utah, and Western Michigan.

Looks like Eichelberger is a good student based on some of the offers (Cornell, Princeton, Columbia).  Helps with our team GPA and hopefully basketball IQ.
