Michael Sam - NFL
« on: February 10, 2014, 11:13:34 AM »
In case you did not see it, a potential NFL draftee decided to make his sexual orientation public.

Should this be big news or should it get no press? Curious what the perspectives are from people on here.

I liked how he handled it...he gets out in front and controls his message.  This will and should get big press, so hopefully in the future sexual orientation is a non issue and unrelated to job performance.

As much as it would be great if it was a non-issue, since there haven't been any open players while they are playing, it is news and should be covered.  However, I am fine with hearing about it.  I'll listen to a media story about this ten times over something as trivial as Tim Tebow blowing his nose that ESPN usually covers.

The unfortunate part is that the NFL GM's still are a bit archaic and there are already stories about anonymous GM's stating they think it will hurt his draft stock.  And talking head moron's like Herm Edwards equating it to having "off the field issues".

BigJayStud: JLP will have to make a decision after next season. She should extend (Purnell) by one year with a very low buyout.

Loved Phil Emerys response today.  Really put him and the bears in a good light, and also prempted any questions on whether the Bears would draft him.  Basically, he is a 3-4 outside linebacker and the Bears will pass on him because of that... Not because he is gay.  But I know that Emery or Trestman wouldn't have a problem with a gay player coming out.

All the anonymous GMs with 3-4 defenses just got put on notice.

Oh, and who else didn't have a problem with gay players?  Vince Lombardi.  A lot of hardcore so called football "leaders" could still learn from Vince.

My personal views aside. This is career suicide for him.

In the right organization, it is a non-issue. Donte' Stallworth said it perfectly. New England had huge turmoil last year, yet it never really become a story with the organzation and they had great success.

And if this truly is career suicide, shame on the NFL and those who made it career suicide.

There was a recent Football Life episode on the NFL Network about Jerry Smith.  He was a gay player on the Redskins in the 70's, and was coached by Lombardi.  Again, the lockerroom knew they had gay players on the team, but Lombardi set the tone of acceptance.

Lombardi had a gay brother and that drove his views.

I gained a lot respect for Vince after learning about that and if freaking Vince Lombardi can create an atmosphere of acceptance in the 60's and 70's, so can these teams today.

I am pretty sure that the Minnesota Vikings will not draft Sam.
