Title: New Head Coach Candidates
Post by: corbinnow on January 11, 2021, 09:07:30 AM
I really think DPU is not going to invest much more than they did with DL.  Covid doesn't help.  Frankly if they were all in with a budget I am sure DL would have been canned last year with Peevy being hired earlier and given the directive to hire the new Head Coach.

They are "Amortizing" DL's contract...its the DePaul Way!

Candidates:

1.  Porter Moser
2.  Briand Wardle
3.  Kenny Payne
4.  Dennis Gates
5.  Rashon Burno
6.  Tim Anderson (although if Peevy liked Anderson he could have him as HC immediately and sack DL).

Think decent guys and small ball budget.  Its not going to be a Pitino or Howland or Dixon or Marshall LOL....

Oh come on, let depaul fans dream big, they have nothing else going for them.  There will be plenty of disappointment in the future, whether it be actual coaching hire or just the usual performance of the team.

Well when fans mention Pitino - I laugh.  You really can't be taken seriously when you say Rick Pitino is a legit target for DPU.

More likely Dennis Gates or that type of candidate than the first 3. He has turned around Cleveland State quickly.

Would you like Rashon, VU?

Btw,  is it easy also rooting for Nova?  I am a DPU and ND football fan in Florida... I should just re adjust my fandom to Duke BBall and Bama Football... much easier -  if I could only do it!

I am a graduate of Villanova, so it is not as though I just grabbed a program to cheer for.

With Peevy, who knows that MBB is the revenue generating program, will probably push for spending some money. What I worry a bit about is they go after someone like Shaka Smart (not saying Shaka himself); what I mean by that, is taking a guy who was on a hot seat coming into the year, has been successful this year, and might translate that into a more secure gig. This is what Oliver did with DePaul.

Maybe Kenny Payne would be a decent HC??  Long time Associate HC at Kentucky,  NBA Assistanr, former NBA player, former NCAA team member winner....

I would think a logical short list (somewhat in order) at this point is something like..

I personally am really pulling for Dennis Gates, as VUWildcat said, he turned around Cleveland St really quickly. Has HM ast. coaching experience and being a lead recruiter. Extremely bright. Chicago guy. The best part is he'll bring Al Eichelberger with him haha

How it will play out.. I think Kenny Payne gets the first call and it's his job to lose.

I know we have a new AD, but are there any other pessimists out there like me that have their Stockholm/Depaul syndrome kicking in that DL may be kept for another futile year?

Matt M Mahon of Murray State

110-51 last 4+ years. This year has been tough but this has and will be a challenging season.

2 NCAA Appearances 2 of the last 3 seasons. Probably would not have got in last year (23-9 lost championship to Belmont) but would been NIT bound.

Recruited and developed Ja Morant and helped make him intro the 2nd overall pick

Porter Moser as much as it bothers me, is someone I see being hired. Why it bothers me, is I feel like he is in the right spot for him; building a really good mid-major program. I think he would be like Keno Davis going up to Providence; over his head at a high major.

Is DePaul really seen as a high-major job though regardless of their conference affiliation?  I guess with a new AD and a big enough paycheck it could qualify.  I just wonder how much damage the decades of incompetence has done.

So now the fun really begins. I think DePaul fans all think this is not going to be a crapshow, because JLP is not running the show any longer. However, it is still DePaul and well, DePaul does DePaul things.

I personally am in the no thank you to Richard Pitino or Archie Miller. Try something new. Give a coach an opportunity who has not crapped the bed elsewhere.

A more adequate slogan for dpu b-ball could not be had for the past two decades.

Do you realize that most 2021 recruits were either just born or less than 2 years old when DePaul last played in the NCAA tournament?

DePaul has put the d in dysfunctional the past 20 years.

We yearn for the days of Delonte Holland and Andre Brown....and millenials are like who?

A lot of Kenny Payne chatter but sounds like he turned us down.  Oh well, let's move on.  I don't care if they get an unknown coach.  But I want some one who CAN coach.  Someone who can develop talent.  I know everyone is short on patience but I think we need to be patient with the search and patient with whomever is hired.  Peevy isn't JLP which is obviously great.  Let's give him some time and see what happens.  Can it get worse than the JLP era?  It's not likely.

Erbs, to your point Payne is done...we move on. Iím hearing talk of Scheyer. Screw that I donít want that. Gates I believe can move a needle. I have a few others in mind that I would like but VU gave some valid points against Stoudamire. Which I agree with. Marquette got their guy and Iím cool with that. But Texas sounds like they will pressing hard for Underwood which puts a little more pressure on DePaul to identify and get their guy.
