Suggestion to the new DePaul President
« on: February 14, 2017, 11:25:13 AM »
We all want a top name coach to come in and resurrect the program but that's not going to happen.

Go after a young assistant coach from a Major College Basketball  & Mid Major College Basketball programs with a track record in recruiting and a good rep for work with & improving players.

Realizing that if this new coach has success here someone high up the NCAA basketball food chain is going  to want to hire him away.  Structure his contract where both parties have an easy out.  Do not worry about extending his contract after he has had some success someone will come calling

If another program wants to hire our young coach away and the head coach wants to leave, let him.     That means he has had success here and moved the program from Point A to Point B.

Always keep a list handy on top assistant coach's to be ready to repeat the process.

When the program has become a regular in the post season tournaments a head coach will start thinking of DePaul as a place to make it his home.  That is the coach that you want to extend his contract with.

I completely agree with the point about how having your coach get taken by a bigger program is a positive; the program is going in the right direction. Just need to ensure you have a successful succession plan. The first coach, or perhaps 2, may depart. However, by that third coach, you may have a program that can sustain success and keep that coach around. I think of Xavier. Gillen, Prosser, Matta, Miller. Chris Mack seems like one who is going to stick around, unless perhaps a top 5-7 job opens up.

Butler seems like another example.

The only suggestion that matters is to hire a new AD from a successful program.  Let the new AD do his job.

Just think, Scott Wainright could be our coach now.
