Chris Mack will likely generate a decent amount of interest from schools in major conferences looking for a coaching hire, especially in the midwest:

If he is the target of Peevey's search, it would obviously be beneficial to be engaging those talks now. Pulling the trigger mid-season allows you to get a jump on the competition for schools that may be starting their coaching search after the season is over.

Eventually we lose our first mover advantage. Don't think we compete well vs other potential job openings. If we are waiting for a current coach, I understand that we can't act until the end of the season. However, if Mack is our first choice we should have hired him before he had other options.
