Just wanted to let everyone know that Texas A&M CC Associate Head Coach Billy Garrett will be DePaul DePaul's third assistant coach.  The ink has just dried, and he will start work in the next week.

Word is he will be the non-recruiting assistant, doing majority of his work on the phone, working with the team, and hosting recruits on campus.

I have to say...this assistant staff is pretty damn impressive.

Agreed, this is one impressive staff.  With the exception of jw, it is easily the best staff at DePaul, ever.

If Garrett doesn't recruit, will he be the X and O man for jw?  It will be interesting to see if some of the ideas jw brought in will be continued.  Like not scrimmaging against each other, no numbers on the backs of uniforms, etc.  It would be nice to see the coaches huddle on a time out, and then give instructions to the team.

Tracy will be the main X's and O's guy, but Garrett is defintely one too.  I think Booth will need time to get off his scouting goggles and put on coaching ones.  But his recruiting will be key.

Wait, I thought this was Kleinschmidt's job, and he was the frontrunner?  Grin

I can say this: Tommie will never be considered for a major spot on the staff in the near future.  I have alot of informants on both DePaul's side, as well as Tommie's, and if it does happen, it will be FAR down the road.

Wouldn't be surprised if he is the Director of Basketball Operations though.  I know that Corzine wasn't doing much of his job during the course of the season, and would actually brag about it to people.  I think his spying days are done.   Cool

The thing that I never realized about Garrett was that he used to be the director of the Illinois Fire; translation - he has a good relationship with Mac Irvin.

The Kleinschmidt info was pointed at me a few times, and I don't think you get nearly the amount of negative private messages that I do.  Granted none were from beerinthebleachers, however others about this topic gave me a few PM's about this.

So yes, was necessary.

Ray Meyer had a better one.  He had Joey, who was a great X's and O's guy, not to mention recruiter (who got Mark Auguire and Terry Cummings), and then went on to become the next DePaul coach and win the National Coach of the Year.  And then next to him was Jim Molinari, who was also a head coach at a few schools, and was also an excellent recruiter.

I think this staff is definitely in the Top 5, even with Booth as an unknown.

I am hopeful, even with Jerry at the "helm", that the ship has turned the corner.

Again, JLP mis calculated in the contract extension, but, she saw this year that JW, as a captain, was as bad as the dude who ran the Exxon Valdez

BUT,  she DID NOT stand pat.

Given the financial limitations of the University, she tried to make the best of a  bad situation.

Make no mistake, these are her choices ,(JW's are gone), and most consider these guys a good pick.

So, let's lay off JLP, try for a day, take a step back and at least give her some kudos on the "Three Amigos".

I think it is a good signing to round out the assistants.  Garrett has plenty of experience as an assistant, and knows the area.  Already having been an assistant in the Big East should make him ready for what is ahead.

Having two experienced assistants on the staff should help Booth as he learns on the job this year.  The staff could really work well together.

Ciep, I actually considered Ray's staff, as it was very good.  A third coach was the coach from U of Texas, San Antonio who had a pretty good run as a HC and then went on to Loyola, I believe.  But for overall experience, I think the current staff is better.  Webster and Garrett bring several years of experience at different schools, in a few top conferences, and have worked for some pretty impressive HCs.  Joey was DePaul-bred and Molinari started his coaching career at DePaul.

FYI, Ken Burmeister who was actually fired by Loyola despite improving the program every year he was there....not a good firing in that case.

Thanks, corb, I couldn't remember Burmeister's name.  He was a pretty successful coach, maybe just didn't have to HC personality, because it would be tough to diss his record.

I have not been a ticketholder for 4 years now after I saw what happened with JLP's supposed initial coaching search and JW not focus on local recruiting with a serious local recruiter.  I saw the mess immediately and gave the tickets away in a charity auction and didn't renew thereafter.

fresh - there's a lot you don't know about Garrett...his relationship with the Fire and the Irvin's is just one of the facts you don't know!  I am more pleased than ever...hell, I now have two connections on staff, so yes, of course I'm getting back in as a ticket holder.  Him hosting kids on campus trips will be awesome.  He's a terrific people person so that's a perfect responsibility for him - he really connects with the kids.  Having been with him since the beginning - '94-'95 -and how he built the Mel back from nothing was amazing to see.  To sell kids on that school in that neighborhood is always a tough deal, but he did it better than anyone, and that includes Tom Shields and his group.  Just wait until he gets more responsiblity - and that will come, I have no doubt about that.

Good luck, BG and DB!

Call out who is saying these things. I still rather enjoyed the A.J. (that was her name?) incident from 2004, where we both outted someone's review of a female on the southside.  Grin

"Not scrimmaging against each other"  Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner. The absolute worst part of Wainwright's coaching.  IMO, the one factor that cost the NIT team an NCAA berth. That team was a very good team at the end of the year but lost some horrible games early because they were unprepared to compete.

I see that our friend BillyBlueDemon has been plugging his Premium Board, stating that "if you pay, you would have known who the three assistants are weeks ago".  I wanted to let you guys in on something just so people stay here, rather than ever think about going elsewhere:

First and foremost, 90% of what he claims is "Premium" is really private messages sent to a select few.  So, even if you do pay, you might not get all the info.  Some of those people cut and paste what he sends, which is basically the same stuff we put on here.  And here is free.

Pertaining to these hires, this board was the first to:

- State publicly that all three assistants were fired.
- State that Webster officially interviewed for the job and watched workouts.
- State when and how Booth's interviews went.
- State that Billy Garrett was the 3rd assistant.

They did mention Billy before we did, but all the other info is the same, however we go MUCH more in-depth.  So, do the math: $10 for less depth, and $0 for more depth.

Just get pissed off when people try to sell free information!
