Strategic Plan 2018 - Happiness or Wisful Thinking
« on: March 21, 2012, 10:57:46 AM »
under the "Develop facilities, technology and the infrastructure" in the final draft of the strategic plan 2018 it says "Seek opportunities to bring men’s basketball back into the city."

courtesy of chisox and his research...have at it guys
Let it be known that during the 2012/2013 season DePaul basketball has officially become known as "The Purnell Error"

I was surprised to see any mention of athletics in the plan considering that JLP wasn't even a part of the drafting the plan. Granted this is a single, vague bullet point in a comprehensive plan but I think this also signals that DePaul is actively seeking a site for an arena and is not content with staying in Rosemont for the long-term.
DePaul Class of 2013, will I get to see a NCAA tourney team by then...

Belle, Ciepier and I have been referencing this for a few months. It is not just wishful thinking; something is going to happen.

I know it's been talked about a few times, I just wanted to point out the exact phrasing in the final draft came out today

I'd say this falls under "it's better that it's there than it isn't".

This is hugely significant for the University.  The fact this isn't being discussed about more is a bit surprising.  If DePaul makes it a goal to play "in the city", then we are finally seeing this program on a trajectory to become a national player like Marquette.

Latest article to fuel speculation about an arena at Fullerton and Sheffield:

Thanks for posting.  I have used the fact that the school hasn't previously announced that they would even "explore" the opportunity of moving to Chicago as an example of poor leadership, mixed priorities, and an unwillingness to invest in one of the biggest brand and student/alumni spirit activities a school has.  Simply placing the phrase "explore opportunities to bring men's basketball back to the city" has resulted in major news paper articles, local news paper articles following the story, television news anchors discussing the possibility, and renewed interest and buzz about DePaul basketball.

Strategically, there could not be a better time than now to make this a reality.  The school has a good coaching staff in place that should be here for a while, a few properties have made themselves available that may work, financing costs and construction costs should come at competitive bargains due to the market, and UofI is reeling at the moment which can cement (hopefully literally) DePaul ahead of UofI in recruiting and college basketball support in the next 6 years until the stadium could be built.  The impact on DePaul's stature, alumni support and involvement, basketball play, television, radio, season tickets, corporate sponsorship, student spirit, and rental/convention income is substantial for the school.  I hope the board of directors knows how the time is now to make this a reality.

I just hope the school engages alumni as this initiative goes forward, as we are willing to help however we can.  There are a lot of us who will help this along, and fueling the buzz is what it will take to make this a reality.  Lets keep this in the lime-light as the news and press would dramatically boost DePaul's image and brand if this project moves forward.

I think the university is playing this close to the vest and maybe venting potential opposition.  As I see it, the Fullerton-Sheffield site may be the best location for several reasons, not the least of which are that it is on campus and close to the El.   It is the least expensive option as DePaul owns most of the land and probably 1/2 of the necessary parking is already in place.

Yes, there will be opposition, especially from the Lincoln Parkers.  As far as traffic is concerned, it will be somewhat minimized by located parking structures on different streets.  Racine, Sheffield, and Lincoln represent about 1600 parking spots, with different entrance/exit points.

If DePaul wants to reestablish its Men's Basketball program, I think Fullerton-Sheffield is the best location possible.

Fullerton/Sheffield is possibly the worst location for suburbanites, especially on a  weeknight with a 6 pm start.  There is just no way to get there easily.  This will alienate the majority of season ticket holders of today, with no anticipation of replacement by City Dwellers/Alum.

Istill see this as a trade between full price paying suburbanites, and free ticket students.

Any attendance figures are yet to be seen as some suburbites will find it easier to get to LP.  This is about restoring pride to a once great program.

Northwest surburbanites...sure.  South suburbs? Southwest? - - Not so sure.  Getting to the Allstate is a pain in the butt, coming from Hickory Hills on the Southwest side.

Here's the solution,70:

Go in early and make a day of it downtown.  Enjoy a nice, leisurely late lunch.  Take the El to the Fullerton stop.  Root on a Blue Demons team full of 5 star recruits all from Chicago.  After the Demons victory, head back to the Loop for a steak dinner with OP, Corby, and the rest of the steak group.

I am on the SW Side KMan about 10-20 minutes from Hickory Hills so I know of what you speak. DPU, I see your point but I believe we'll pick up attendance by the surrounding demographic. Not everyone on the Westside is broke and it is pretty easy for them to get to. Lincoln Park is full of alot of younger adults who happen to be sports fans who would enjoy going to a NCAA Division 1 b-ball game. Even if we suck, our competition is appealing. Plus you buy yourself time with the novelty of the new arena to build a better team. if we don't succeed in that endeavor then the Program cannot be saved.

So, now you want me to pay those outrageous Chicago Sales Taxes, too.  10.75% on food service.  You're right.

The DePaul men's basketball program will be just fine with a move to the city.  I have no concerns at all.  For the suburban fans that may drop off or the commute made tougher, well that is too bad, but there will be many more new fans and the team, program and experience will flourish.   As they say in Hollywood, "You are supremely important, until the next guy comes along."

And tell me DPU70 can afford the spread between 7.5% and 9.5%.  That 2% hurdle rate on a $25 ticket is not that daunting.

Quit your crying 70, your retired ass has nothing to do anyway on a weekday other than bang on the keyboard at home between your bowling lessons and bridge matches with the other cotton heads on the North shore... interrupted only by you sipping bourbon, smoking cigars and watching  the hummingbirds fly around your tomato plants.  ;D ;) :)

Sounds like an ideal retirement for me. except I would have moved to the tropics near the ocean.
