DePaul closes out their staff with Garrett
Former Providence St Mel head coach Billy Garrett returns to Chicago, as he accepted an assistant coaching position with the DePaul Blue Demons. Garrett has prior Big East experience, as he spent five years as an assistant coach at Seton Hall, from 2001 to 2006. He then spent one year with Steve Alford at Iowa before spending the past two years, as the associate head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
“I have known Billy since his tenure as a high school coach at Providence St. Mel’s,” stated DePaul head coach Jerry Wainwright. “He is a quality professional and person and he brings great experience to our staff.”
Garrett got his start as a college basketball assistant back in 2000, when he took a position with Siena. The following year, Siena head coach Louis Orr was at Seton Hall, and he took Garrett with him. During their five years at Seton Hall, the Pirates went to two NCAA tournaments and one NIT tournament.
Prior to Siena, Garrett was head coach at the Providence St Mel for six years, as well as being a part of the Illinois Fire AAU program. During his time at Providence St Mel, Garrett had a 130-50 record. He also coached former Blue Demon Levar Seals during this time.
“This is a great opportunity for me and my family and I feel like I’m coming home to where things started,” said Garrett. “With my experience at Providence St. Mel and working with DePaul players LeVar Seals and Steven Hunter, I know what DePaul is all about. DePaul is Chicago’s basketball program and I can’t wait to hit the ground running.”
