DePaul head west in the hopes of starting 4-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season this Wednesday at 9:30pm, where they will be hosted by the 5-1 California Golden Bears. The Blue Demons come into this game off a 75-70 victory against Indiana State. The Golden Bears come into the game after suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of the Florida State Seminoles. These two teams last met during the 2006-2007 season at Allstate Arena, where the Blue Demons walked away with a 90-62 victory. The Blue Demons hold the series lead at 3-2, with a two game winning streak against California.

DePaul vs. Indiana State Preview

DePaul will finish off a mini two game home stand with a 1 P.M. Saturday matchup with the Indiana State Sycamores.  The Blue Demons enter this game on a high note as they have started the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2003-2004 season.  DePaul’s latest win came on Wednesday against the Detroit Titans by the score of 71-62.  Dar Tucker led the team with 22 points.  Indiana State enters the game with a 0-3 record after a home defeat Wednesday to the Murray State Racers.  Jay Tunnel led the Sycamores with a team-high 12 points and 7 rebounds.  Many fans will remember when these two teams met in the 1979 Final Four.  Larry Bird and Indiana State defeated the Blue Demons 76-74.  These two teams last met during the 2003-2004 season in a tournament honoring the 1979 Final Four teams.  DePaul was victorious by the score of 78-66.  DePaul leads the all-time series 10-1.

DePaul vs. Detroit Preview

The DePaul Blue Demons will welcome the University of Detroit Mercy Titans to the Allstate Arena home opener this Wednesday night at 7:30. The Blue Demons come into the game looking to start off, for the first time since 2003-04, with a 3-0 record, as they have defeated Albany and UIC thus far. The Titans come into the matchup with a 1-2 record, suffering losses against Purdue and Western Michigan. Their lone win was against Eastern Michigan. The Blue Demons hold the series advantage at 27-7, with a two game winning streak against the Titans.

DePaul Vs. UIC Preview

The Blue Demons will face their first road test of the season this Saturday night against the in-state rival UIC Flames.  DePaul looks to improve on their 3-9 road record from a season ago.  The Flames come into this game with a record of 1-1 after winning their home opener Wednesday night against Northern Iowa by the score of 84-77.  The Blue Demons enter the game with a record of 1-0 after defeating the Albany Great Danes 75-64 Monday night at McGrath Arena.  These two teams met last season at the Allstate Arena, and the Flames were victorious by a score of 85-80.  DePaul holds the all-time series advantage 2-1.

The Flames enter the 2008-2009 season with its three leading scorers all returning from a season ago: guards Josh Mayo and Robert “Robo” Kreps, and center Scott VanderMeer.  Senior Josh Mayo is the player that UIC leans on to be the leader of their team.  Mayo has found a way to improve his game each year since he has been at UIC.   Mayo has improved his three point shooting each season and is now one of the best three point shooters in the nation, shooting an impressive 47% from beyond the arc last season.  He is not only limited to three point shooting, though.  Over the past year, Mayo has been able to get to the free throw line at a greater frequency, where he is a career 85% shooter.  “Robo” Kreps enters his sophomore campaign

Stovall and Freeland Sign

CHICAGO – Mike Stovall has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at DePaul it was announced today by Blue Demon head coach Jerry Wainwright.

Stovall is a 6-5, 200-pound forward who is attending Mineral Area Community College in Park hills, Missouri.

“We are very excited that Mike has decided to join our program. He gives us the big guard we will need to replace Jabari Currie and certainly the experience he brings from junior college will help our current young players. It is also very exciting to us that Mike is a Chicago area product who played in an outstanding program at Marshall High School.”

A native of Chicago, Stovall was a standout at Marshall where he graduated in 2007. As a senior, Stovall led the Commandos in scoring with 20 points per game while also averaging eight rebounds and four assists.

In his final two years as a prep, Stovall led Marshall to consecutive third-place finishes in the Illinois State Tournament. Both times, the Commandos lost to eventual state champion Simeon in the semifinals. Stovall was named to second team all-state in 2007, and among his highlights was a 16-point, 13-rebound performance in a state quarterfinal win over Lincoln. He also scored 16 points in the third-place game against Stevenson.

As a junior at Marshall in 2005-06, Stovall averaged 15 points per game as a junior and made the all-city team.

Last season Stovall played at Oregon State where he appeared in seven games averaging 0.9 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists.

 Freeland Press Release

CHICAGO – Tony Freeland has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at DePaul it was announced today by Blue Demon head coach Jerry Wainwright.

Freeland is a 6-6, 200-pound forward who is a senior at Fremont High School in Los Angeles, Calif.

“We are very excited that Tony Freeland has decided to join the DePaul basketball program. Tony is a combination forward who can make an immediate impact in our program with is athleticism. He is an outstanding young rebounder and with added strength will give us the type of versatile player we need to compete in the BIG EAST Conference.”

Freeland averaged 19.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game last season as a junior while earning first team All-City honors in Los Angeles. Freeland was named the Coliseum League’s Most Valuable Player after helping Fremont to the conference title. He had 10 games with double figure rebounding totals and set a single-game school record with 24 boards against Los Angeles View Park Prep. Freeland also had a career-high 32 points against Los Angeles Crenshaw. He posted eight double-doubles as a junior.

Ranked as the78th-best forward in the nation by ESPN.com, Freeland was an honorable mention All-American by Street and Smith's.
