Big East announces DePaul's Home/Away conference matchups

The DePaul Blue Demons, fresh off an 0-18 conference season, learned today which conference foes it will be facing at home and what their conference road schedule will look like. As standard, the Blue Demons will face three teams twice in conference, in a home/away series. The Blue Demons lucked out in getting Marquette, St. John's and Rutgers as their home/away setup. Marquette is coming off a 12-6 conference record, but will be without Dominic James, Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews, who all completed their eligibility. St. John's was 6-12 while Rutgers finished 15 (ahead of the Blue Demons) at 2-16).

 

Overall, the Blue Demons will host the following teams at Allstate Arena; Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Providence, Rutgers, St. John's, South Florida, Syracuse and West Virginia. Their road portion consists of Cincinnati, Connecticut, Marquette, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova.

 

Dates, times and television/radio information will be released at a later time.

DePaul closes out their staff with Garrett

Billy GarrettFormer Providence St Mel head coach Billy Garrett returns to Chicago, as he accepted an assistant coaching position with the DePaul Blue Demons. Garrett has prior Big East experience, as he spent five years as an assistant coach at Seton Hall, from 2001 to 2006. He then spent one year with Steve Alford at Iowa before spending the past two years, as the associate head coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

“I have known Billy since his tenure as a high school coach at Providence St. Mel’s,” stated DePaul head coach Jerry Wainwright. “He is a quality professional and person and he brings great experience to our staff.” 

Garrett got his start as a college basketball assistant back in 2000, when he took a position with Siena. The following year, Siena head coach Louis Orr was at Seton Hall, and he took Garrett with him. During their five years at Seton Hall, the Pirates went to two NCAA tournaments and one NIT tournament.

Former DePaul star named assistant coach

CHICAGO – DePaul men’s basketball coach Jerry Wainwright announced today that former Blue Demon standout David Booth has joined the staff as an assistant coach. Booth returns to his alma mater after playing professionally around the world and scouting in the NBA.

“David’s experience as a player and scout at the professional level makes him a great fit for our basketball program,” said Wainwright. “David is a great role model and mentor for our players and we all look forward to him joining the program.”

Booth was inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame in February as one of the program’s all-time basketball greats. Over his career from 1988-92, Booth totaled 1,933 points for second all-time while leading the Blue Demons to a pair of NCAA Tournaments and one NIT appearance. Overall, he’s ranked among the program’s all-time best in scoring, scoring average, rebounding, blocked shots, steals, field goals and free throws. Following the 2008-09 season, he still ranks in the top 10 all-time in scoring (2nd), field goals (3rd), steals (5th), free throws (5th) and blocked shots (6th). After graduating from DePaul as the first player in school history with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 blocks, he spent 14 years playing professionally around the world. Booth made stops in France, Greece, Italy, Japan and South America.

DePaul hires Tracy Webster for assistant coach position

Tracy Webster's PhotoCHICAGO – DePaul men’s basketball coach Jerry Wainwright announced today that Tracy Webster has joined the program as an assistant coach. The native of Harvey, Ill., comes to DePaul following stints over the last eight seasons as an assistant coach at Kentucky, Illinois, Purdue and Ball State.

“I have known Tracy since he was a player and I have always admired his passion for the game,” said Wainwright. “He is an outstanding young professional who brings great experience and knowledge to our program.”

Webster spent the last two years at Kentucky where he helped lead the Wildcats to a pair of postseason appearances. A year ago, Kentucky went 22-14 and reached the NIT Quarterfinals following a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007-08. Before moving to Lexington, he was an assistant coach at Illinois from 2004-07 and an assistant at Purdue during the 2003-04 season. The Illini made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of Webster’s three seasons in Champaign, including a trip to the NCAA Championship game in 2005. Webster’s one season at Purdue saw the Boilermakers make the NIT.

So Long Dar Tucker

CHICAGO – DePaul sophomore Dar Tucker announced today that he will submit his name for the 2009 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard/forward from Saginaw, Mich., will not return to the men’s basketball program for the 2009-10 season and has indicated that he will hire an agent.

In 61 career games over two seasons, Tucker totaled 986 points for a 16.2 career scoring average. His 986 points rank third in DePaul history for freshmen and sophomores behind Mark Aguirre (1,516 – 1978-80) and Quentin Richardson (1,147 – 1998-00). Overall, he is among the program’s all-time leaders in three-point field goals (13th – 103 3pt. FG’s), scoring average (14th – 16.2 ppg) and scoring (47th – 986 pts.). Tucker totaled 50 career games in double-figures and racked up 17 games of at least 20 points in his career including two games of at least 30 points.
